Cooling with The Unico System offers numerous benefits for homeowners from better aesthetics, to quiet, efficient operation, to better humidity removal, to a high standard of comfort with no drafts or hot/cold spots. That high standard of comfort is also available when The Unico System is your choice for central heating. This article will take a deep dive into the three methods The Unico System can use to provide superior heating comfort when the outside temps get chilly or downright frigid.
Method #1: Hot Water Coil
Hydronic or hydro-air heat is achieved when a hot water coil is added to a Unico System air handler. This approach combines the best aspects of water-based radiant heating with a central ducted system. Think of it as having the warm, cozy heat generated by a radiator gently delivered throughout every room in your home.
The water for the hot water coil can be provided by a boiler, an outdoor heat pump, or a combination thereof (often referred to as a “dual-fuel” system). This method can be used to provide primary heat for the whole house or can be used in conjunction with another hydronic heating method – such as under-floor or wall panel-mounted radiant heat systems – to provide immediate supplemental heat during those times of the day or year when firing up the primary hydronic system would take too long to take the immediate chill out of the air.
Method #2: Heat Pump Coil
Heat pumps have become an increasingly popular and efficient method of providing heat across the globe. Once limited to more temperate climates, advancements in technology have led to heat pumps being able to perform dependably and efficiently in harsher, colder climates. This has also led them to becoming the cornerstone of the electrification movement in HVAC for reducing dependence on less efficient or environmentally conscious methods. In fact, many governments (including through the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act) are providing incentives in the form of cash rebates and/or tax deferments for switching to heat pumps for residential and commercial HVAC.
A heat pump coil attached to a Unico System air handler works in much the same way a hot water coil, only the source is specifically an outdoor heat pump. The flexibility with this approach comes from the different heat pump types available in the market – they can be either air based or geothermal based, with heat generated naturally from the earth or a nearby water source like a pond, lake, or ocean.
Like the hot water coil, the heat pump coil is an excellent method for providing superior and highly efficient central heating with The Unico System.
Method #2: In-duct Electric Element Heat
The third method of providing heat involves adding an electric element heater to the plenum (main duct) attached to the Unico air handler – often referred to as electric furnace heat.
This approach is an excellent way to provide primary heating in very temperate climates where temperatures don’t dip below freezing for extended periods of time. It’s also a great way to provide comfortable and efficient back-up or supplemental heat when used in conjunction with a separate primary heat source, like a radiant heat system (radiators, or in-floor, etc.)
Superior Comfort & Efficient Central Heating – No Matter Which Method You Choose
The Unico System provides end users with the flexibility to choose the central heating that best suits their needs without sacrificing the the features and benefits they experience from the system in cooling mode. No matter which method you opt for you can rest assured that you’ll stay warm and comfortable when the outside weather turns nasty and cold.

The team at Five Star HVAC Services know a thing or two about the benefits of SDHV as a key customer offering. Owner Mark Pawlowski, General Manager Pete Gambino, and their crew of pros have been installing The Unico System in the Greater Chicagoland area for almost 30 years. Those of us of a certain age may remember the name Northstar as a top provider of HVAC systems in Chicago. Master HVAC technician Mark earned his small duct bona fides there before launching Five Star in 2019.
Pete estimates that 75% of Five Star’s business consists of residential installation and maintenance work, with most of it occurring in the Windy City’s iconic older housing stock as well as in many high-rise apartments and condominiums. “It’s why we love Unico so much,” he says, “its versatility offers many ways to solve thorny problems due to space restrictions, comfort demands, and efficiency requirements. When you’re dealing with as many niche applications as we do, you need a premium product that dependably meets your customers’ needs. For us, The Unico System is that premium product.”
Five Star HVAC’s relationship with Unico has even taken them to some interesting places outside of Chicago, having recently installed three Unico Systems in a log cabin hotel in the heart of Montana. Notes Pete, “Like many of the tough installations we tackle, this project simply wouldn’t have been possible without The Unico System.”
We look forward to hearing about more unique applications from the pros at Five Star HVAC Services in the years to come.

As the the seasons change and temperatures get colder, it’s time to ensure your Unico System is ready to handle the winter ahead. Properly preparing your HVAC system for cooler months not only helps maintain its efficiency but also extends its lifespan. A few simple steps can make all the difference in how your system performs when the cold arrives. Let’s dive into how you can winterize your Unico System to protect it from harsh winter climates. First, clear away any debris, such as leaves, dirt, and twigs, around the unit and also make sure the coil is professionally cleaned
- Switch Your Thermostat Settings
As fall approaches, if you also use your Unico System for primary or supplemental heating, you’ll want to switch from cooling mode to heating mode. The Unico System offers three methods of heating:
- Hydronic or hydro-air heat with a hot water coil added to a Unico System air handler.
- Electric element heat added to the Unico air handler – referred to as electric furnace heat.
- A heat pump which provides both heating and cooling with one indoor and outdoor unit. If your system includes a heat pump, make sure it is set to heat efficiently during the cold months.
Efficiency Tip: If you’ve been using a programmable thermostat, now’s the time to adjust the temperature settings to match your winter needs. Keep in mind that setting or programming the temperature a few degrees lower while you’re asleep or away from home can lead to significant energy savings.
- Inspect and Replace Air Filters
Air filters are a critical component of your HVAC system’s efficiency. Clogged or dirty filters force your system to work harder, leading to higher energy consumption and potential damage to sensitive components. Check your air filters before colder weather arrives, and replace them as needed. Depending on usage and the type of filter, you should replace it every 1 to 3 months for optimal performance.
- Check for Air Leaks and Sealed Ductwork
Efficiency is key when it comes to heating your home. Over time, air leaks can form in your ducts, allowing warm air to escape and reducing your system’s overall effectiveness. The Unico System uses two duct systems: the main ducting, or plenum, which connects directly to the air handling equipment; and the flexible supply tubing that delivers heat to individual rooms. Where possible, it’s essential to inspect your ductwork for leaks or damage before winter sets in. If you find any issues, seal them with duct tape or hire a professional to ensure the system is fully airtight.
- Clean and Inspect Vents and Registers
Blocked or closed vents can hinder your HVAC system’s airflow, causing it to overwork and underperform. Before the cold months hit, walk through your home and make sure all vents and registers are open and free from obstructions like furniture or curtains. Cleaning dust and debris from these areas also helps to improve indoor air quality and system efficiency.
- Winterize the Outdoor Unit
Taking the time to properly winterize the outdoor unit is crucial. First, clear away any debris, such as leaves, dirt, and twigs, around the unit. This ensures that airflow is not restricted and that the unit functions optimally. If your outdoor unit is protected by any additional structures such as fencing, chain-link caging, etc., ensure these are also free of debris and allow for unrestricted airflow. Many outdoor unit are situated on pre-formed or poured concrete pads – inspect these for cracks, breaks or unevenness.
If your Unico System includes an outdoor heat pump, a great way to protect it from the harsh winter elements is by investing in the Everstand, a universal heat pump stand. The Everstand lifts your heat pump off the ground, preventing snow, ice, and standing water from accumulating around the unit. This additional clearance helps protect your system from corrosion, freezing, and other weather-related damage, which can compromise performance. By using the Everstand, you’re providing an extra layer of defense against winter weather while ensuring your heat pump can operate efficiently all year round.
- Schedule a Professional Maintenance Check
While DIY maintenance goes a long way, scheduling a professional tune-up before the cold season is essential for ensuring your Unico System runs at peak performance. An HVAC technician can thoroughly inspect the system, clean the components, and address any potential issues before they become costly repairs. Regular maintenance can extend the life of your system and provide peace of mind knowing your home will stay warm and comfortable during the winter.
- Consider a System Upgrade
If your Unico System is older, now might be a good time to consider upgrading to a newer, more energy-efficient model. The latest HVAC systems are designed to provide better heating and cooling efficiency, helping you save on energy costs while maintaining consistent indoor comfort.
The Benefits of Winterizing Your HVAC System
Winterizing your HVAC Unico System is a smart way to ensure it runs smoothly throughout the colder months. Properly preparing your HVAC system for winter is essential for several reasons:
– Enhanced Efficiency: Winterizing helps your system run more efficiently, which translates to lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint.
– Longer System Lifespan: Regular maintenance and protection from harsh weather conditions can extend the life of your HVAC system, saving you money in the long run.
– Improved Comfort: A well-maintained system ensures your home stays warm and comfortable, no matter how cold it gets outside.
– Peace of Mind: Knowing that your system is prepared for the worst of winter weather allows you to focus on enjoying the season instead of worrying about emergency repairs.
