Unico Spot Cooling Keeps Mechanics Cool & Safe

The Problem

How to keep mechanics cool in a space where the doors are constantly open. Owner Will Hawkins reached out to Scott Davis for a solution to help his workers deal with the extreme heat of Mississippi summers. Unico Spot Cooling allowed the doors to remain open while providing 30⁰ F colder air to areas where the mechanics do most of their work. The flexible hoses allow the mechanic to direct the conditioned air specifically to where they are working.

The Solution

One 5-ton Unico Air handler using a 14-SEER denser is used to cool 8 different workspaces in the garage. The Unico air handler hangs in the corner of the garage bay with a 10-inch I.D in¬sulted plenum running overhead to all workspaces. Using flexible supply tubing that terminates in 2.5-inch outlets that produce 3000 FPM of air each provides quicker cooling to the worker. Unico’s 6-row deep coil uses 100% outside air to deliver 30⁰ F colder temperatures to the worker than the ambient air in the garage. When the outside temperature is 100⁰ F, the Unico system will deliver 70⁰ F degree cold air out of each outlet. • Flexible supply tubing delivers conditioned air to the workers at various points where it is needed • Reduces energy inefficiency because the entire space is not cooled • Provides conditioned hot or cold air OR 100% fresh outside air • Increases employee comfort, health, and productivity

The Results

Conditioned air for the entire mechanics’ workstations is supplied by one Unico M4860 four to five-ton air handling unit matched to a high-efficiency outdoor heat pump. Rigid main trunk ductwork (plenum) carries air from the air handler near ceiling height, avoiding interference with vehicle hoists and pneumatic tools or machinery. Flexible supply tubing provides conditioned and/or outdoor air directly to the worker at various points throughout the garage.
